Active Learning Strategies for Microbiology: Moving Beyond Passive Instruction
The Active Learning Study Cycle
Students who seek a B.Sc microbiology admission must know the following
study cycle to avoid lacking a proper routine:
- Preview: Read
through the study material you are going to cover in class ahead of
time. Make note of all the big
ideas and issues that seem confusing to you. This preparation will give you a better
chance of following along with the professor’s lecture.
- Attend:
Go to class compulsorily and write down what the professor says (whether
on your computer or in some notebook). Ask questions when necessary. You
will be able to retain all the information better if you stay engaged with
the lecture actively.
- Review:
Take about 10-20 minutes to read through all your notes and fill in gaps.
Summarize all the big ideas from the B.Sc
Hons Microbiology professor’s lecture and think about how all the
concepts taught to you relate to one another.
- Study:
Make a specific goal for yourself for one hour. Use all the active study
techniques to review your material. Solve important equations and explain
ideas from your notes without looking. Diagram your concepts, if
necessary.
- Check:
Reflect on your study progress over the classes. Check if the current study plan is
working for you. You must also see to it that you are able to teach these
concepts to someone else. However, keep analyzing if a different study
technique works better for you.
A 5 - day Study Plan
Students who seek B.Sc microbiology admission can also
switch to the 5-day study plan if they do not want to bear the stress of the
‘all-nighter’ routine.
- Choose a Particular Time Period: Space out your entire exam preparation process over a period of
at least five days. You can devote roughly two hours each day to your
studying routine.
- Divide the Course Material Into Sections: Divide your complete study material into four or more sections
for your ease. Each piece of information can be introduced or reviewed at
your convenience in a 2-hour study session.
- Introduce Fresh Sections: Introduce and cover a new section of material in each study
session. You can review later what you studied previously and even make
flash cards for later.
- Use Different Techniques: Use active study strategies every day to ensure you do not miss
out on the concepts or formulae.
- Test Yourself:
Self-test whenever you feel you are ready. Attempting to recall
information from your memory aids in learning better than repeated viewing
of the materials.
